All characters are equal but some are more equal than others. The game is designed to be usable with two RPG systems: the d20 System and the Tri-Stat dX system. It seems the case in every game I play that my favorite character has terrible stat gains and I get advised not to use them. That means you still have a choice to make a character good even if the game used a fixed growth system, provided you are willing to pay the price, which I think is not expensive compared to the time needed to get good rolls. These items are consumed upon use and their numbers are very limited. For example in many games you have items that raise a certain stats by a set amount. It is not exclusive to random growth system though. It is good for players who feel attached to their characters. With enough persistence you can get good rolls out of a character with bad growth. It is a good point I neglected to consider. It seems to be the the best of both worlds but if your stats are going to be the average expected value what is the point of randomizing the growth in the first place? What is it doing that a fixed growth system isn't doing? What are the benefits? What do people think about this approach?īecause I hate when my favorite characters are gimped because the developers decided to make that character shitty. I do notice that some games use random growth but unlike Fire Emblems where you have 40 levels max, they greatly extend the scale and so in the long terms your stats gravitate to the average anyway. Do you think this advantage offsets the disadvantage of possibly gimping your favorite characters? Do you think it is possible to have the best of both worlds? In one playthrough you may use A character more because it had better growth, in another you may use B character. One of which is it makes each character unique and increases variety and replayability. It sucks when it happens but randomn growth does have some advantages. For example in Fire Emblem games the character you were planning to use may only gain 1 HP for several level-ups. The common argument is that random growth can potentially gimp your character. It seems most people prefer fixed growth over random.
